Police ID Suspects In Danbury Kidnapping And Assault

Police have named six men from Florida as suspects in a kidnapping they say they thwarted Sunday evening.

DANBURY, CT — Police have named six men from Florida as suspects in a kidnapping they say they thwarted Sunday evening.

Angel Borrero, 23, Reynaldo Diaz, 22, Anthony Pena, 23, Josue Romero, 26, Ricardo Estrada, 21, and Michael Rivas, 18, are facing charges which include first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping and reckless endangerment. Additionally, Borrero faces charges of reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, and evading responsibility. His bond is set at $2 million. Diaz, Pena, Romero, Estrada, and Rivas are being held on a $1 million bond.

At 5:40 p.m. Sunday, Danbury Police responded to Clapboard Ridge Road near Dogwood Lane for a disturbance. A witness told police that three men exited a van, began assaulting another man, pushed him into the van, and fled, police said.

Officers spotted the suspect vehicle on Clapboard Ridge Road, attempted to stop it, but the driver sped away, police said. The suspect vehicle was located a short distance away on Cowperthwaite Street.

Officers found two victims inside the van, both were bound with duct tape and one had been assaulted with a baseball bat. Both were transported to the hospital for treatment. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to police.

Witnesses reported to police that six suspects left the Cowperthwaite Street area on foot. Patrol officers found four of the suspects, police said. Three officers suffered non-life threatening injuries during the search and apprehensions, police added. Further investigation led to the apprehension of the other two suspects at a short-term rental home in Roxbury.

Police spokesperson Erin Henry said that it appears that the victims were specifically targeted but the exact motive is currently unknown.
