St. Gregory School In Danbury Placed On Lockdown After Bear Incident

St. Gregory School was placed on lockdown after "an agitated man with a firearm​" was seen preparing to take on a bear, police said.

DANBURY, CT — Police reacted swiftly to the report of "an agitated man with a firearm" near Great Plain Road around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

As a precaution, police notified St. Gregory School at 85 Great Plain Road, and the school was placed on lockdown.

When officers arrived, they quickly established the homeowner was legally carrying a firearm on his property after spotting a bear in his yard, according to the Danbury Police Department. Neighbors confirmed to police they had seen a bear wandering through the neighborhood.

Police lifted the lockdown, and dismissal procedures at St. Gregory School were not affected.

Officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection advise Connecticut residents to remove birdfeeders and bird food from their yards from late March through November. And not only should homeowners keep garbage cans inside, the state wildlife biologists advise adding ammonia to your trash to make it unpalatable.
