The United Way’s SAVE Program Gives Senior Volunteers a Tax Break

Danbury-area seniors who volunteer for Housatonic Habitat for Humanity may be eligible to qualify for a property tax credit through the ‘Seniors Add Valuable Experience’ (SAVE) program run by The United Way of Western Connecticut.

Now in its eighth year, the SAVE program connects seniors with a variety of local agencies and non-profit groups based on the volunteer’s skills and interests. Volunteers who are homeowners, over 65 and meet certain income criteria may qualify for the 2018-2019 tax breaks if they volunteer for 100 hours by June 30, 2019. The program started in July and runs through the end of June, 2019.

“Of course, it’s not just about the tax break,” said Fran Normann, Executive Director of Housatonic Habitat. “Studies show that volunteering helps people feel more connected so they are less susceptible to loneliness and depression. More than that, a growing body of evidence suggests that volunteering improves physical health too, lowering blood pressure and contributing overall to a longer lifespan.”

Housatonic Habitat for Humanity focuses on making a meaningful difference in the lives of qualified working families by promoting financial stability and self-sufficiency through ownership of affordable homes. Households often consist of those who have limited assets and who have jobs that also have income caps.
