All Clear Given At WCSU After Gunman Scare

Police have given all clear at Western CT State University after a gunman scare Tuesday.

DANBURY, CT — Police have given the all clear after a gunman scare at Western Connecticut State University Tuesday.

Western Connecticut State University cancelled all classes and activities on both campuses as of 4 p.m. Tuesday after ordering a shelter in place for the Westside campus after reports of a man with a gun in the Visual and Performing Arts building.

"There have been reports in social media that there was a confirmed shooter who ran into nearby woods. That is not true. There was no shooter. Police are still searching the VPA Ctr & a shelter in place order remains in place. (Please) be patient and we will give more info soon."

The university sent out a message to the school community earlier on Tuesday afternoon about the shelter in place.

"Shelter in place continues on the Westside campus only," the university tweeted around 3 p.m. "Police are going room-to-room to secure the Visual & Performing Arts Center. Nothing has been found. Continue to shelter in place at Westside until further notice."

In a 4:30 p.m. update, university officials again say nothing has been found and they continue to search the campus.

Danbury Police tweeted that, "At this time, Danbury Police have responded to an unsubstantiated report of a man with a gun in the west side campus of Western Ct. State University. Entrance to the school is closed. We request that you stay away from the area. Thank you."

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton tweeted around 3:45 p.m. that police had completed an initial sweep and had started room-to-room clearance. (To sign up for updates to this story click here.)

Westside Middle School and Mill Ridge Elementary will be released with supervision from Danbury Police, Boughton said.

Police are at the scene and searching the building, according to the Connecticut Post. There have been no reports of shots fired.

A student saw a person with what appeared to be a long gun near the VPA building and reported it, according to Fox 61.
