Connecticut Weather: Odds Rise For Accumulating Snow On Christmas

The National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Weather Advisory for most of CT in advance of Friday's expected ice storm.

There's a lot going on with the latest holiday weekend weather forecast for Connecticut. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Friday into Saturday for the entire state except for the immediate coastline. A minor accumulation of snow and ice is expected Friday afternoon and evening for all areas except the immediate coast.

Travel on Friday night for much of the state may be very slippery. And as Santa Claus kicks it into high gear on Christmas Eve, snow is now expected for Connecticut, and chances are increasing that it may accumulate. The snow is expected to begin late Sunday and end late morning on Christmas Day.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said this evening "Some snow for Christmas morning! Doesn't look like a big storm but accumulating snow is becoming more likely." Hanrahan has been discussing the possibility of snow on Christmas the past few days.

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Fred Campagna said, "A few days to go, and likely more computer model twists and turns. Latest Euro model would have a "nice" white Christmas with snow arriving around midnight and ending by late-morning. Not a big storm, but enough to make it pretty in most of Southern New England."

"A true white Christmas is defined as an inch of snow on the ground. The latest EPS run suggests that the storm on Christmas day has a 50-70% chance of 1", and a 10-30% chance of 3" in CT," Campagna added.

As for the more immediate concern, the National Weather Service says for inland sections of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties to expect freezing rain after 1 p.m. Friday which is expected to impact the evening commute. Some snow and ice may accumulate on roadways.

For Hartford and Tolland counties on Friday, the weather service says an inch of snow and ice may accumulate beginning Friday afternoon and lasting until late Saturday morning.

On the coast, there may be a brief mix of snow, sleet and rain around midday Friday but it will quickly change to rain and it could be heavy at times.
