Darien's Borecki Wins CT Geo Bee for 3rd Year

Michael Borecki, Middlesex Middle School 8^th grader and CT’s geography whiz kid, has won the state’s geography bee for the third time in a row earning him the honor to advance on to the National Geography Bee competition in Washington, D.C.  

Students in fourth through eight grade competed in the CT Geography Bee, which was held at the Central Connecticut State University on April 5^th and is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.  In order to compete at the state level, the students first each won their school geography bee and then took a written exam in which they scored in the top 100 in the state. 

Borecki’s impressive Geography Bee credentials include: winning his school’s Geography Bee every year since he was in 4^th grade, placing in the top 100 in CT on the written exam for the last five years, and winning the CT geography bee for the last three years.   Borecki is the 7^th Darien student to win the CT bee since it began in 1989.

Borecki prepares for his geography competitions with the help of Barbara Ivey at Middlesex Middle School.  Ivey is the Geography Bee Coordinator for Darien public schools and also works in Middlesex Middle School’s library.   She and Borecki work together three or four afternoons a week to prepare for the geography competitions.

As CT Geography Bee champion, Borecki won a $100 prize, the “complete National Geographic on DVD”, and an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where he will represent CT  in the national finals at National Geographic Headquarters on May 20-22^nd. 

The National Geographic Channel and the Nat Geo Wild will air the final round of the 2013 National Bee, moderated by Alex Trebek, on Thursday May 23^rd.
