The candidates compete in honor of two local children who are cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar donated counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks. The top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles. The 2011 Man & Woman of the Year will be announced on May 7, 2011.

“Back in 2006, a large tumor was discovered in my chest. It was non-Hodgkins lymphoma, one of several forms of blood cancer,” said Dr. Zembroski. “Thanks to state-of-the-art medical treatment, I am now completely cancer free.”

“ As a victor over blood cancer,  I know first hand the trials of the brave people who endure treatment and extended hospital stays because of these cancers,” said Dr. Zembroski.

“Challenges like this fundraising competition are similar to what we do for the patients of the Darien Center for Integrative Medicine – raise awareness and create tangible results for people who need it the most.” Leukemia is still the leading cause of disease related death among children under the age of twenty.
