Before the suspects entered the home, another family member called 911 when the suspects were seen "rummaging on the front porch," police said in an update Thursday afternoon.
The homeowner observed that at least one of the suspects was armed with a handgun while they began to enter the front door to the home, police noted.

"At this point the homeowner feared for his safety and the safety of his family which included two small children," police said. "As the suspects began to make entry, the homeowner discharged his firearm at the suspects."
The suspects then fled the area before police units arrived.
Det. Sgt. Mauricio Vigil told Patch the homeowner fired a single shot.
An initial investigation by Darien detectives determined a male juvenile potentially matching the description of one of the suspects arrived at Bridgeport Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed into surgery, police said.
"The juvenile’s condition is reportedly stable at this time and detectives continue to look into the individual’s possible involvement in the incident," police said.
From working with area police departments, the suspect vehicle was determined to have been stolen from a home in Fairfield before the incident, police said, noting the vehicle has been located and seized as evidence by Darien police.
"We would like to thank the Bridgeport and Fairfield Police Departments for their assistance in this investigation," police said. "No further details are being released at this time."
During an initial announcement Thursday morning, police said there would be a continued police presence on Five Mile River Road for several hours.
