Attorney Hired By Darien Family In School Cheating Case: Report

One family has hired an attorney and is considering a legal challenge.

DARIEN, CT — The family of one of the students disciplined in the recent cheating scandal at Darien High School has hired Stamford-based attorney Mark Sherman, as the family considers a possible legal fight in the matter, reports the Darien Times.

Sherman, while praising the district's "measured discretion and compassion" in punishments handed down, told the Times that his office is reviewing the different types of disciplinary action taken by the district. Patch reached out to Sherman for comment but did not receive a response.

The scandal involved a group of students who broke into an office at the school over a weekend in January, photographed answers to English and World Studies midterm tests, and then distributed the answers online.

Nearly 300 students are estimated to have benefited from knowing the answers, which led the school and district to re-administer the tests last week.

During a discussion about the scandal earlier this month, several parents and students expressed disappointment over the punishments for the students at the heart of the scandal, who mostly received in-school suspensions.

Whether Sherman will file a lawsuit on behalf of the family has not been announced.
