Blue Wave Field Hockey Outlook

Girls field hockey gunning for another championship.

The Darien High School field hockey season begins on August 29. Darien Patch met with Coach Mo Minicus to get the scoop.

LAST SEASON:

The 2008 team tied with Norwalk 1-1 in the opening game of the regular season. After that the Blue Wave ran the table. They won the next 15 games in the regular season, two more to win the FCIAC title, and then four more to win the state championship. They finished the season at 21-0-1, and ranked number one in the state for the second year in a row.

KEY PLAYERS RETURNING:

Goalie Aimee Rich will start for the fourth consecutive season. Taylor Wells is back to play  defense, and twins Anna and Ella Heck return. Alex Bair, another defender, will play again; so will mid-fielder Ellie Riegel.

COACH'S CORNER:

Mo Minicus starts her tenth season as head coach at DHS. She says, "Most of the girls played in the off-season and I expect another fast start in '09." Coach Minicus talked about "success breeding success," and is looking for that winning attitude once again.

MOST FUN INCIDENTS LAST SEASON:

Mo says it's a tie between the team's annual scavenger hunt that features some unusual items, the annual "dance-off" among the players, and something called a "Line Relay," in which the team is divided in half, and whichever team forms the longer line within a short period of time wins. The line is comprised of the players, equipment and "borrowed" football players.
