Catalytic Converters Stolen From 4 Vehicles In Darien: Police

DARIEN, CT — Catalytic converters were reported stolen from four vehicles parked in Darien last week, according to police.

In a news release, Police Sgt. Dan Skoumbros said the first of these thefts was reported Feb. 8 by a man who told officers he parked his car in the Noroton Heights Train Station parking lot the previous day.

When the owner returned to the vehicle around 4 p.m., he noticed his the muffler sounded off. After having the vehicle inspected, he was told the car's catalytic converter was missing and it would cost approximately $2,500 to repair it, Skoumbros said.

That same day, officers met with a Hollow Tree Ridge Road resident who said she parked her car in the parking lot of her condominium complex around 9 p.m. the previous day. The next morning, the owner noticed her car made a loud rumbling noise when she started it.

After having the car towed, a mechanic confirmed the catalytic converter was cut off from the vehicle, Skoumbros said.

On Feb. 11, officers were called to a Noroton Avenue residence after receiving a report of multiple stolen vehicle parts. A man told officers the catalytic converters were stolen from two of his work vans, both of which were last driven Jan. 31.

Police previously reported a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle parked in the Ox Ridge School parking lot on Jan. 27. The owner of the vehicle discovered the theft after noticing the car's exhaust was very loud when she started it, according to police.
