The incident occurred last week on the Post Road.

DARIEN, CT — Another cooking oil theft has been reported in Darien, according to police, this time for about $100 worth of the liquid material.

Officers responded to the 1000 block on the Post Rd on Oct. 8, after a report of a "subject in a white van illegally siphoning used cooking oil from the drums located behind the businesses."

The incident was reported at about 5 a.m. when the complainant had just arrived at work to open the business.

"The complainant stated that upon approaching the subject operating the van [the person] replied that he had 'been contracted' to remove the oil from the barrels," wrote Darien police in a statement. "Knowing this was not true, the complainant contacted this agency. The vehicle had fled the scene prior to officer arrival."

Restaurants throughout Fairfield County periodically have reported such thefts because a black market exists for used cooking oil.
