Darien Mourns Loss Of Board Of Finance Member, Longtime Town Volunteer

Darien Board of Finance member David Martin died unexpectedly on July 30, according to the town.

DARIEN, CT — David Martin, a longtime volunteer in town and most recently a member of the Board of Finance and the Hindley Holmes Royle Building Committee, died unexpectedly on July 30. He was 65.

"David was incisive, thorough, collaborative, and a terrific town colleague. He will be sorely missed," First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky said in the town's bi-weekly newsletter to the community. "Details regarding planned services will be shared as appropriate. In the meantime, please keep David, his wife Ann Reed, and their children and grandchildren in your prayers."

Martin, a Democrat who was first elected to the Board of Finance in 2021, also previously served on the Representative Town Meeting and Board of Selectmen.

Away from Town Hall, Martin volunteered as a Darien Little League coach and a Cub Scout leader.

"David Martin was a highly valued member of the Darien Board of Finance and a friend and partner to all of us who served with him," wrote Board of Finance Chair Jim Palen in an email to Patch.

"David brought a financial, analytical and fixed-income background to his work on the board, including advising on the HHR building committee which is the largest ever capital project. His affection for numbers and his attention to details were always accompanied by a humorous side that we all enjoyed," Palen added. "His service to our town on multiple boards and his volunteerism in our community will be missed dearly."

The Darien Police Department posted about Martin last week following the news of his death.

"The Darien Police Department mourns the loss of Board of Finance Member David Martin. Mr. Martin suddenly passed and we extend our sincere appreciation for all that he has given to and volunteered for our community," the department posted on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Martin family. Rest In Peace sir."
