Darien's Mather Homestead Becomes A Museum

The historic home is located at 19 Stephen Mather Road.

DARIEN, CT — The Mather Homestead, the historic Darien home built by the Mather family in 1778, was officially donated by the family to its foundation this month and will be run as a museum, the foundation announced.

"The Foundation will preserve the historic home as a museum for community education and enjoyment," wrote officials in the below Facebook post. "Did you know that Stephen Mather was the founder of our modern day National Parks System? He and the Mather generations that followed were dedicated to environmental preservation and the public enjoyment of our nation's treasures."

Located at 19 Stephen Mather Road, the home was in the Mather family for seven generations, and "is considered one of the finest examples of 18th century architecture, a wood frame structure with two stories plus a basement and attic," according to the foundation.
