Man Stole $100,000 From Darien Resident, Police Say

DARIEN, CT — A 54-year-old Boston man was arrested last week, more than three years after police say he stole approximately $100,000 from a Darien resident.

Cary Lee Kleiner was extradited on July 21 to Darien from Salem, Mass. where he was in custody as a fugitive from justice, Darien police said.

Kleiner was charged in Darien with first-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft and associated conspiracy charges.

On Jan. 3, 2023, Darien police took a report regarding identity theft, fraud, and larceny after a resident reported discovering an unauthorized electronic transfer from a personal bank account into an unknown business account, police said.

"The victim then received a call indicating someone had been admitted to a New York hospital using the victim’s identifying information," police noted.

An investigation determined Kleiner obtained the victim’s personal information, created a fraudulent LLC, opened a bank account in the victim’s name, linked it to the victim’s legitimate account, and then conspired with others to withdraw and disperse funds - approximately $100,000 - through additional transactions, according to police.

Kleiner was held in Darien on a court-set bond of $500,000. He's scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 11.
