More than $3K Racked up with Credit Cards Using New Canaan Woman's ID

A thief or thieves opened up credit card accounts and spent money using a New Canaan woman's identity.

A New Canaan recently started getting credit card bills and credit card application denial notices from accounts she never opened or applied for, she told police.

The 64-year-old resident of Millport Avenue told New Canaan police that the first she heard of an “Express Card” opened in her name was when she got a $973 bill in the mail for money spent on the card in New Jersey last December.

A Kohl’s store credit card, applied for in December, had $898 charged to it in Port Chester, NY. A Best Buy store credit card had $1,400 charged to it from a Bronx, NY location. The total from those three bills is $3,271.

The woman also received notices that store credit-card applications in her name for Team Mobile, Game Stop and Victoria’s Secret were denied. The woman was contacting each credit card company to dispute the bill, but was told she should report the matter to local police.

New Canaan police are investigating the incident and will ask for store video surveillance records.
