DARIEN, CT — For the second time in just the span of a few weeks, a racial slur - the N-word - was found written in a sixth grade girls bathroom stall at Middlesex Middle School.

Superintendent of Darien Public Schools Dr. Alan Addley sent a letter to MMS families Friday morning alerting them of the discovery.

"I am deeply troubled that we are facing these incidents, and it is frustrating to witness this persistent hatred and intolerance in our school community. We must collectively and firmly stand against these actions, and I ask for your continued support in making this clear to our students," Addley said.

School administration and the Darien Police Department are investigating the incident, Addley noted.

"As a District, we are unwavering in our commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all of our students," Addley added. "Every student deserves to feel safe and valued at school, and these acts of hate undermine that foundation. As always, the District and school is addressing this incident with urgency, ensuring that our response is thorough and transparent, so that every student feels welcome and respected."

MMS Principal Kate Dimoulas and staff will address these issues through education and programming for staff and students, Addley said, encouraging families to initiate conversations at home about kindness, respect, and the impact of language.

In conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League and the First Selectman's Office, a "Superintendent's Conversation" event will be held for PK-12 parents on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. in the MMS Auditorium. The conversation will focus on antisemitism and the broader issue of hate speech, Addley said.

"In the meantime, as we celebrate this special day of love and kindness, I thank you for your continued partnership in this important work," Addley continued. "I hope you will consider attending the Superintendent’s Conversation. Together, we will ensure our school remains a place where all students thrive in a culture of respect."

On Jan. 23, the N-word was found written in a sixth grade girls bathroom at MMS, and last October, the same word was found scrawled on a playground pole at Hindley Elementary School.
