DARIEN, CT — The Darien community is rallying in support of the employees of one of the town's popular restaurants, which is temporarily closed during the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

A GoFundMe page has been established to raise money for the 10 furloughed staffers of the Sugar Bowl, a folksy luncheonette, owned by Bob Mazza, on the corner of the Post Road and Brook Street in downtown Darien.

As of Tuesday, the page had generated more than $22,800 toward a goal of $25,000.

"The Sugar Bowl Luncheonette has been a Darien fixture for more than 50 years," wrote the page's organizer, and regular Sugar Bowl customer, Larry Perlstein. "Owner, Bob Mazza tried but is unable to keep the restaurant open during the current health crisis leaving the kitchen and wait staff without their regular income."

In a letter on the Darien Times website, Mazza thanked the contributors to the effort, saying that he never expected such an outpouring of support.
