Winter Storm Watch Issued for Connecticut, Snow Estimates Increasing: UPDATE

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of Connecticut Thursday. Here's how much snow to expect.

This may finally be the winter storm where Connecticut residents may need to buy the milk, bread and eggs. For the first time this winter, the entire state is looking at getting dumped on with snow and it could accumulate up to 12 inches in some parts.

The National Weather Service is certainly taking the storm seriously and has already issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire state Thursday. There may be some initial mixed precipitation but it will quickly change to all snow, and likely heavy snow during the morning and early afternoon on Thursday, the weather service states.

The worst of the storm is expected early Thursday morning and it tapers off by mid afternoon, the weather service states.

For southern Connecticut, which includes all of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties, the National Weather Service is predicting 6 to 10 inches and locally higher amounts are possible.

Snow develops around 3 a.m. Thursday and keeps falling fast and furiously until around 2 p.m. Temps stay just below the freezing mark at around 27-30 degrees and winds will gust up to 25 mph too.

For Hartford and Tolland counties, the weather service is predicting 8 to 12 inches of snow Thursday. The heavy snow begins early Thursday morning and doesn’t taper off until Thursday evening. The precipitation may begin as a bit of mixed precipitation but quickly transition to all snow.

“Snow could fall heavy at times and impact both the morning and evening commutes,” the National Weather Service states. Winds could gust in northern Connecticut to 35 mph at times.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said in a video piece on his Facebook page that on Wednesday temps could approach the upper 50s and then temps drop quickly during the evening hours and the stage is set for Thursday morning's snow.

He said by daybreak Thursday there will be snow everywhere in Connecticut and he called it a “major snowstorm.” The worst of the snow is expected between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Some light snow is also possible on Saturday, Hanrahan said.

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Fred Campagna wrote, “Damp and raw tonight. Very mild tomorrow...50 to near 60 in spots. SNOW on Thursday. Sounds like a cruel joke, but it's true...(ALL OF CT in a Winter Storm Watch for THU, including Litchfield, County.)”
