Curious Black Bear Roaming Middlefield Neighborhood

Black bears are no stranger to the Lake Beseck area, but George Carter had never seen one before. 

Until Friday morning.

Carter, who lives at the corner of Chipeway and Huron roads, said a bear wandered into his backyard this morning and at one point even stuck his face in a screen window.

"My son came in and he says, 'Look, look, there's a bear,'" Carter said. "He was poking around where my trash barrels are near my living room window. He actually stood up and put his face against the window. You can still see where his nosed pushed against the screen."

At least one other neighbor spotted the bear shortly after 7 a.m. and warned Carter's son who happened to be outside. 

When the bear came wandering into his yard Carter managed to snap several photos of the animal with a cell phone.

The bear weighed about 150 pounds, he guessed, and had tags on each ear, an indication that the animal is being tracked by state wildlife officials.

"They've been in the neighborhood before but this is the first time we've ever seen one," Carter said.

At one point, Carter managed to coax the bear to turn around by making a squirrel like sound but said he didn't want to get too close.

Eventually the animal walked away on its own.

"We were so fascinated by him I wasn't really nervous," Carter said.
