Oaxaca always has a few surprises awaiting me every trip! While walking in my favorite "exercise" park a few mornings ago, I came upon an interesting structure made from plastic bottles wired together. It is actually a container made from plastic bottles to hold other plastic containers that people throw away. There are no recycling centers here that I'm aware of, but these bottles are being collected and used by a company that makes new products out of recycled plastic! Very creative!
A few years ago my "exercise" park (really called the Llano, or Juarez Park) was renovated, adding a section at the top of the park where there are fountains built flush with the stone walkway. These fountains go off in a sort of random fashion, and there are always children running through the spray to cool off. What a fun sight! Yesterday a young boy in a wheel chair was being pushed through the rising and falling water by his brother while his parents looked on. Both boys were laughing and loving the spray. It would have made a poignant photo, but I wasn't about to invade their privacy. I'm posting one, however, of a few other kids having fun in the other "fountain" in the same walkway.
Today, while returning to my room after basically two breakfasts (I needed more coffee before the 15 minute walk back up to my part of town), I came across a Calenda being professionaly photographed in front of the beautiful Santo Domingo church. A Calenda is basically a group of dancers parading in lovely costumes, carrying flowers, big paper balloons, and dancing in the streets (or in this case, in the huge stone paved area in front of the church). I caught a few photos of these really handsome and attractive dancers as they performed for those who were filming them.

There is always "free entertainment" somewhere in the city--just another reason I love this place! In fact I can hear loud fireworks as I finish this blog--a very common sound at any time of the day or night. For certain, Oaxaca always has something to offer its residents and visitors.
