Thanksgiving gives us emotional context for considering our most basic needs, and reflecting on our gratitude. In Connecticut, unseemly weather has made many families thankful for hot meals, warm showers, clean clothes and light by which to read or pay the bills. Having a roof over our heads is easy to take for granted, but home offers so much more than shelter. Within our homes, we carve sanctuaries. We have craft corners, reading nooks, media rooms, task-happy office spaces, playrooms and mudrooms. We entertain in dining rooms, great rooms and kitchens. We expand our indoor space with outdoor decks, patios, stonewalls, pergolas, swimming pools and landscaping. Home can be a projection of ourselves through the use of artwork, furniture, lighting, space and color. Home encompasses both vision and need.
In this season of giving, I asked some of my clients to share what it is about their homes that make them feel thankful. I know that I put them on the spot, and I'm sure there are countless things about their homes that they love and appreciate, but here are some reflections of Thanksgiving. Thank you to my clients for sharing.
“The layout of this house has been so wonderful for my 94-year-old Dad. He has his own space but can easily access the rest of the first floor. I’m so grateful we found it.” 34 Sycamore Drive, Durham
“We are thankful that our home has large family-friendly rooms (especially the kitchen), perfect for gathering with friends and family. We also love the private setting and the fact that we have lots of land.” 517 Haddam Quarter Road, Durham
“We’re thankful for a woodstove warming up the family room on a cold winter night and for a large deck to entertain family and friends and enjoy the summer nights.” 171 Mica Hill Road, Durham
“We are grateful for cozy family spaces to share laughter and light moments, and large bedrooms for each of us when we need a quiet space of our own.” 80 Mack Road, Middlefield
“My husband and I are grateful that our 4 kids each had their own bedroom, a media room, and a large yard to play soccer, volleyball, and paintball. Also, after the crazy weather this year, we are very thankful for underground wiring!” 29 Evergreen Terrace, Durham
May you always find many opportunities to be thankful in and around your home. Have a lovely Thanksgiving.
