2012 was a great year for technology. Lets take a look at some of the biggest trends from the last 12 months, shall we?

The average smartphone screen size increased dramatically over the year. Apple, for the first time since the release of the original iPhone in 2007 increased the screen size (diagonally) from 3.5 to 4 inches. Samsung, meanwhile released the Galaxy Note 2, at a whopping 5.5 inches. Having personally held this phone, its ridiculous! However, it does allow more room to view content, such as emails, pictures, and videos. Its so big that you look a little silly holding it up to your ear when you make a phone call.

During 2012, we saw some of the most interesting laptop designs yet, including the race to the thinnest continuing. In addition to this, with the release of Windows 8, manufacturers thought a little outside the box. For example, the Lenovo Yoga bends into a tablet or a laptop by having a cool hinge design. Or the Sony Vaio Duo 11, which has a slide out keyboard. Laptops continue to outpace desktops in sales.
Tablets
I'm sure some of you readers found yourselves with a tablet under the tree this year. I know I did! Tablets really started to catch on with consumers this year, aided by the release of the Asus Nexus 7, and the iPad mini, making them more affordable for everyone. With prices on tablets dropping, will there ever be a time where there are more tablets than computers? It's a matter of when, not if, I think...
Pixel density
One of the coolest trends this year was the pixel density. Apple released two "retina" Macbook Pros, with more pixels packed into 15 and 13 inch displays than HDTV's. Later in the year, Google and Samsung released the Nexus 10 with another gorgous display, with more pixels than the iPads! When you read text, or look at pictures, on these screens, it simply looks beautiful. This crossed over into smartphones, with the HTC Droid DNA for Verizon having a 1080p screen into a 5 inch display!
I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings us. Happy New Year!
