Bridge Closure Announced In Durham For Safety Reasons

BREAKING: The news was announced this morning.

Written by Laura L. Francis, First Selectman

Dear Residents,

On August 12, 2018 the Local Traffic Authority (Board of Selectmen) voted to limit access to a five-ton load. Since then, monthly inspections have been conducted and it has been determined that the deterioration of the culvert has advanced. Therefore, the Local Traffic Authority, at its meeting of December 17, 2018, voted to close access until the culvert ( Indian Lane Bridge) is replaced.

This action is taken to protect the safety of those who travel Indian Lane and comes at the recommendation of our Town Engineer. The closing will take place no later than December 21, 2018.

Since the weight limitation was imposed, town engineers have been working on the replacement design; the town has been awarded a grant notice to fund 50% of the bridge replacement under the CTDOT Local Bridge Program; and the electors of Durham authorized a bond that will include local funding for the remainder. We currently anticipate the following general project schedule to complete construction and re-open the bridge:
