CRHS Boys Start With A Win

When the whistle blew to start the boys soccer match on Wednesday it was clear that the boys had seen the 7-0 score the girls posted against North Branford on Tuesday and they were looking to one-up them.

With excellent fan support from parents, friends, students and members of both the Strong Middle School team as well as members of the Coginchaug Soccer Club, the varsity boys put on quite a show in the first half.  In his sixth season with Coginchaug, Head Coach Chris Cap spent a significant time of his preseason training on maintaining possession of the ball and it showed.   Not only was North Branford unable to string together more than 2 passes, not once in the entire match did they successfully move the ball into their offensive end.  The only time the goal keeping tandem of Senior Co-Captain Jeff Cummings and Sophomore back-up Danny Gavrilovic touched the ball was when a Coginchaug player passed back to make sure they were still awake.

Sophomore Striker Alec Bogen netted the season's first goal early in the contest, receiving the ball just outside the 18 yard box, he settled quickly and sent a bullet inside the far post.  Coach Cap was pleased with his game, saying, "he had a great game, his hustle and work ethic were second to none.  He applied a lot of pressure up top."  He added that he was pleased to see both starting forwards get onto the scorers sheet.  The game's second goal came from Senior Co-Captain Tyler Kovacs.  The coach also admired Kovacs effort stating "it was really nice to see him taking on players and finding the back of the net."  Tyler picked up his second goal of the match when he converted a penalty kick just a few minutes later.

Freshman Garrett Puchalski picked up his first career high school goal when he fired a failed clearance just inside the far post.

The high humidity and 90 degree heat took it's toll on both squads and although CRHS held possession for the entire half, they were unable to convert and the final score held at 4-nil.

Overall Coach was pleased with the effort.  "In the first half, we came out and we tried to do what we were doing well in our preseason; moving the ball, spreading the ball out wide.  The second half was not the best half of soccer and not what we were hoping for.  But with the heat, the kids took their foot off the pedal a little bit.  But we were still able to get the result which is the most important thing."
