Coginchaug, Immaculate Battle Down to the Wire
The two teams squared off in an exciting Class S boys basketball championship game Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
UNCASVILLE, CT - A double dose of the dynamic D's provided Immaculate High School with the Class S boys basketball championship Saturday evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Darrius Smith and Darius Hunter combined for 37 points, leading the Mustangs to a 53-43 victory over Coginchaug to clinch the school's first title since 2012.
Smith scored 14 points in the first half to propel Immaculate to a 27-18 lead at intermission. He finished with 21, while Hunter added 16.
Coginchaug, playing in its first championship game since 1982, battled back in the second half, closing the gap to one early in the fourth quarter, but an Immaculate surge midway through the period put the Mustangs back in front by 10.
Cameron Powers had 12 points and Jacob Sapia tallied 11 for the Blue Devils.
