COGINCHAUG SOCCER CLUB STRIKES BACK AT CANCER

On Saturday, September 6th, the first day of the Fall 2014 soccer season, the travel teams in the Coginchaug Soccer club teamed up with their counterparts in Rocky Hill to raise money for the children of a close friend of mine.

Dr. Robert Aube was 48 when he died from a rare form of cancer. He left his wife and 4 children. He was a soccer and baseball coach and a scout leader. He was a pillar in his community, so much so, that Rocky Hill Mayor, Henry Vasel, declared 9/6/2014 Robert Aube Day in Rocky Hill.

In July I approached the coaches in the club and asked if they would help my friend’s family in this cause, and every single one of them volunteered without hesitation. Last month, I did the same with the referee’s and again they all stepped up. Our referees normally earn $50 per game. By volunteering to officiate two games each in this tournament, $100 per game went toward the fund. The games were played simultaneously on 4 fields from 7:30AM to 5PM. The soccer club voted to donate the $150 team entry fee toward the fund as well. I would sincerely like to thank the coaches, assistants and mangers of the travel teams and the referees and the members of the club who voted to donate to this cause.

The tournament was followed that evening by a pasta dinner and dance. The event was a sellout. Coginchaug SC President Ken Judson and F.O.C.U.S. President Judi Judson were in attendance. In addition to them, I would like to thank my friends who supported this fundraiser by attending, even though they didn’t know Bob -- they knew what he meant to me. I would like the Preneta, Temple, Houchin and Cade families for attending as well as Gary and Lauren Paxton who donated, even thought they could not be there.
