The Boys and Girls soccer teams both seemed to pick up on Friday afternoon right where they left off in their season opening games.
The Boys team held possession for the second half on Wednesday and came out in the first half of game 2 against Westbrook doing the same thing. The problem in each of these periods was that although they kept the ball away from the other team, they also failed to convert it into a dangerous attack. Although he's very happy with the results and "thrilled to be 2 and 0," Coach Chris Cap sees a lot of work ahead for the team. "We need to play more consistently, and stop playing the balls straight up and down the field." he said after the match.
The second half of Friday's game showed some of that same inconsistency. Although there were a few chances earlier in the match, it wasn't until almost half of the period elapsed that the team started to seriously threaten the Westbrook defense. A Michael Decker corner kick was too much for the keeper and nearly finished off by the CRHS attack of Freshman Garrett Puchalski and Senior Tyler Kovacs. That seemed to be enough to wake the team up. Just a few minutes later Senior Michael Decker placed a ball to Kovacs at the top of the 18. He turned and avoided the double teaming defense and fired the game winning goal.
Less than 2 minutes later CRHS sealed the game. Senior Goal Keeper Jeff Cummings came way out of the box to send the ball long to Senior Midfielder Jack Temple. Temple settled the ball and sent Junior Midfielder Zach Taylor and Michael Decker through the defensive line. Taylor beat the two closing defenders and put the ball on goal. Westbrook's keeper made a lightening reaction save but the ball ricocheted high and Kovacs was there, leaping over the defender, to finish the play.
"I'm very happy to come out of the week with six points, but I hope lads are up for a true test next week with games on Monday, Tuesday and Friday against 3 very strong teams. I think we can compete with them; I know we can compete with them."
The girls also played a home game on Friday afternoon. Like their counterparts they picked up right where they left off, too. After a commanding 7-0 win against North Branford, the girls continued their onslaught against the visiting Knights from Westbrook High School.
This time they need only 1 half of soccer to notch the 7 goals, and added 2 in the second. As they did in the first game, they used a team effort here too, with 8 different players getting a hand (or in this case a foot) in the scoring. Senior Victoria Buonanni repeated her 2 goal performance with 2 more. Freshman Olivia Preneta continues to impress by adding her second of the year. Also repeating their game 1 scoring performances were Sophomores Amy Arcari and Jess Drop. Seniors Kasi Whitaker and Kim Romanoff notched their second goals of the young season, while Junior Janelle Berry got her first of the year and Sophomore Cassandra Kovacs scored her first ever varsity goal.
Even with all these goals, Coach Megan Kavanaugh lauded the effort of Senior Megan Sirois, "Megan played multiple positions and maintained intensity throughout the game. Her versatility and field vision showed consistently throughout the game. She registered 4 shots on goal."
Both teams are back in action on Monday.
