Durham and Middlefield Schools to Receive Security Enhancements

One school in Durham and one in Middlefield will have security enhancements due to a combination of state and local funding allocations.

Durham and Middlefield are two of the towns that will be receiving state funding to enhance security infrastructure at its schools.

Durham will be spending $9,700 of its money for the work; the state will be spending the other $6,100. In Middlefield the town will be spending $6,800 and the state will be spending slightly more than $3,000.

Governor Dannel Malloy Friday announced the grants which total $10 million that will be used for 182 public and private school in 51 towns across the state. The funds were approved under the School Security Grant Program that was created in 2013 as part of a broad legislative package focusing on gun violence prevention, mental health and school security issues.

To date the state has made $53 million available to over 1,200 schools in three separate rounds of funding.

"We have a moral obligation to provide a safe learning environment for out students," Malloy said.
