Durham Referendum Date Set: Here's What You Need To Know

Residents are being asked to approve $7 million in bonding.

WARNING AND NOTICE OF REFERENDUM

The electors of the Town of Durham and other persons qualified to vote in referenda of the Town are hereby warned and notified that a Referendum in the Town of Durham, Connecticut will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, for the following purposes:

1. To vote to approve or disapprove the following question at referendum which will be placed on the voting machines:

“Shall the resolution entitled, ‘RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN APPROPRIATION OF $7,000,000 FOR THE ACQUISITION AND CONVERSION OF THE FORMER FRANCIS E. KORN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING INTO A COMMUNITY CENTER AND THE FINANCING OF SAID APPROPRIATION BY THE ISSUANCE OF GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS OF THE TOWN AND NOTES IN ANTICIPATION OF SUCH BONDS IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $7,000,000, be approved?

The ballot label for said question shall read as follows:

“Shall the Town of Durham appropriate $7,000,000 for the acquisition and conversion of the former Francis E. Korn Elementary School building into a community center and authorize the issuance of general obligation bonds and notes in the same amount to finance said appropriation?
Yes _____ No _____”

The vote on said question will be taken under the authority of Section 3.7 of the Town’s Charter and Chapter 152 of the Connecticut General Statutes, as amended. A vote of “Yes” will be a vote for approval of the question, and a vote of “No” will be a vote for disapproval of the question. The full text of the resolution is on file and open to public inspection in the office of the Town Clerk during business hours.

Notice is hereby given that the locations of the polling places are as follows:

Absentee Ballots will be counted at the following central location: Korn School, 144 Pickett Lane
Durham, CT 06422

Registered electors of the Town of Durham, and, United States citizens, eighteen years or older, owning taxable property assessed at $1000.00 or more on the last completed grand list of the Town are eligible to vote at the referendum at the above locations.

Absentee Ballots are available at the Town Clerk’s office, 30 Town House Road, Durham, CT 06422.

Voting tabulators will be used. The polls will be opened at six o'clock in the morning (6:00 a.m.) and will remain open until eight o'clock in the evening (8:00 p.m.).
