Groundwater Ordinance Adopted in Durham

New rules on the pumping of groundwater were recently adopted at a Durham town meeting.

The approved ordinance will forbid the pumping of groundwater within a zone of 100 properties in central Durham, according to the Town Times.

Three decades ago, polluted water was discovered underneath central Durham, which led to discuss of ways to address the situation.

Under the ordinance, certain property owners have to connect to the public water supply and abandon their private wells.
