Jonah Spector Wins HK Spelling Bee

Spelling champ will represent school at upcoming New Haven Register Spelling Bee in March.

 

Students at competed in the National Spelling Bee national event with hundreds of other schools across the country On Friday, Jan. 20.

Six students from each grade competed in the final round:

Grade 5: Marie Emerson, Michaela Flaherty, Ian McHugh, Summer McNiell , Lizzy McManus, Quincy Platt. 

Grade 6: Scott Elliott, Brandon Lovene, Michael Mercier, Olivia Whiteman, Joshua Zanelli, Jonah Spector.

Grade 7: Ben Blair, Darren Chon, Jeremy Fleig, Jaci Hamilton, Greta Nystrom, Aydan Skeban. 

Grade 8: Natalie Blodgett, Lilian Carmichael, Megan Cerino, Zachary Herrman, Kyle Sullivan, Rebecca Wang.

Lilian Carmichael came in third place and Michaela Flaherty came in second place. The Championship round went into a "sudden death" tie-breaker between Michaela Flaherty and Jonah Spector. The winner, Jonah Spector, will represent us at the New Haven Register Spelling Bee in Lyman Auditorium at SCSU in New Haven this March. The winner of the New Haven Register Spelling Bee will receive money for travel accommodations to Washington, D.C., to compete at the 2012 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in May. The final bee will be broadcast on ESPN.
