Killingworth Student in Top Five of Class of 2011 at Sacred Heart Academy

Fifth Ranking Student in the Class of 2011 at Sacred Heart Academy, Austin E. Ferrara, 18, plans to attend UConn as a pre-pharmacy major.  She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ferrara of Killingworth.

Special Honors and Achievements: Wellesley Book Award, 2008 Chemistry Scholarship, CT Science Fair – First Place, 4-H Large Animal Herdsman Award, 4-H Fair Outstanding Member, 4.0 Gold Tassel Scholar

Extracurriculars: National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society, Key Club, Earth Club, Latin Ballroom Dancer

Quote: “I am most proud of winning the Chemistry Scholarship during my sophomore year and earning First Place in the CT Science Fair and getting the Wellesley Book Award during my junior year. I plan to attend UConn as a pharmacy major and eventually pursue a career in pharmacogenomic research. I credit my internship with the CT Agricultural Experiment Station, which Sacred Heart arranged, and the extensive science and math courses at SHA for my career aspirations. I know that I am prepared to take on the challenge of college level science and pharmacy courses because of the unique, advanced courses I have taken from exceptional teachers at the Academy."

She has taken the most rigorous courses of study available and has backed up her interest in pharmacy with a course load rich in math and science. Austin is a natural leader both in the classroom and in the local 4H group she started on her alpaca farm, leading that group in training and as an officer for the annual fairs in her area. Austin will attend the University of Connecticut in the fall," Guidance Counselor Patrick McAllister says.
