Middlefield Adds 8 Volunteer Firefighters

The Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department recently added eight new members, the most the department has added from one recruiting class, according to officials.

Statewide, volunteer departments added a total of 207 new members through a recruitment drive spearheaded by Everyday Hero Connecticut, reports The Middletown Press. The group is a partnership created by the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

It costs the Middlefield department $1,000 per volunteer for training, which was partially paid through a grant. In addition to Middlefield, the Killingworth volunteer department also added two new members through the recruitment effort.

“The skills and experience gained as a volunteer firefighter are invaluable and have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of others,” said Chief Fred Dudek, program manager for Everyday Hero Connecticut, in a statement, as reported by the Press. “Those who join their local fire departments sign up for one of the most rewarding opportunities they’ll ever have.”
