"Samples are collected weekly by DEEP staff and are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab for the presence of certain indicator bacteria," officials wrote in a statement.

The indicator bacteria "are not disease causing pathogens," officials added, but are one of the tools they use "to evaluate the potential for contamination of waterbodies."

When the park will reopen for swimming was not announced, but it could be as early June 22.
