MxCC Awarded $1.6M by State for Cafeteria Renovations

Rep. Matt Lesser (D- Middletown) and Sen. Paul Doyle (D-Wethersfield) announced the state Bond Commission is poised to approve funding for additions and renovations to the cafeteria at Founders Hall at Middlesex Community College.  

The nearly $1.6 million in state funding is on the agenda and expected to be approved at the Commission’s meeting next Friday.

“I want to thank Gov. Malloy and the Board of Regents for making investments in Middlesex Community College a priority,” Lesser said. “Middlesex is Connecticut's most crowded institution of higher learning and I can't think of a more deserving target of our support. Additionally, this project will create 32 construction jobs.”

The $1,595,731 in state bond authorizations is expected to be approved Sept. 27 at the Bond Commission’s meeting at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

“Over the past two and a half years, my administration has made unprecedented investments to improve and transform our higher education system, including our community colleges, because these are investments that will benefit our state’s future economic growth and workforce,” Dannel P. Malloy said.  

“These upgrades at Middlesex Community College will improve the college’s infrastructure, helping to enrich the overall learning experience and provide students with the tools they need to sustain a successful career.” 

According to MxCC President Anna Wasescha, the new addition to Founders Hall will include glass walls that look out at the forest edge, a stand of trees that is a significant natural resource for the college and the community.

Wasescha said, “This expanded student space will provide our students with more opportunities to study and socialize on campus and in an environment that takes advantage of the beautiful natural environment that borders Middlesex. I can't wait to see the first shovel break ground and I'm already planning the grand opening.”

“Earlier this year we secured funding for a new academic building at the college in our efforts to address the school's neglected infrastructure,” said Doyle. 

“The funding we're announcing today will improve on-campus student life by providing additional space for campus groups and school events. As enrollment at the college continues to grow, we'll keep working to provide the resources students need to thrive.”
