Trump Calls for Investigation of Blumenthal After Comey Comments

"Your bullying won't silence my calls for an independent prosecutor and investigation," Blumenthal said.

President Donald Trump issued some scathing tweets against Sen. Richard Blumenthal after the Democrat from Connecticut criticized the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Comey became the latest high-ranking law enforcement official to be fired by Trump on Tuesday.

β€œThe need for a special prosecutor is now crystal clear," Blumenthal said in a statement. "President Trump has catastrophically compromised the FBI’s ongoing investigation of his own White House’s ties to Russia. Not since Watergate have our legal systems been so threatened, and our faith in the independence and integrity of those systems so shaken. The only way to restore faith in a non-political, non-partisan FBI is to appoint an independent special prosecutor."

Comey drew the ire of both Democrats and Republicans as the FBI investigated the Trump and Hillary Clinton campaigns.

Trump didn't take too kindly to the comments.

"Watching Senator Richard Blumenthal speak of Comey is a joke," Trump tweeted. "Richie" devised one of the greatest military frauds in U.S. history. For years, as a pol in Connecticut, Blumenthal would talk of his great bravery and conquests in Vietnam - except he was never there. When caught, he cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness...and now he is judge & jury. He should be the one who is investigated for his acts."

Trump was referring to comments Blumenthal previously made about his military service during the Vietnam era. The issue came up in 2010 when Blumenthal was running for senate. He obtained several deferments and eventually ended up in the Marine Reserve, but didn't serve in Vietnam, according to the New York Times.

Blumenthal fired back late Wednesday morning.

Greenwich billionaire and hedge fund founder Ray Dalio vouched for Comey. Comey served as general counsel at Dalio's Bridgewater Associates hedge fund from 2010 to 2013.Dalio said Comey is a man of integrity and one who is willing to sacrifice himself for a greater purpose, according to the Connecticut Post.

Later on fellow Connecticut U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy chimed in. Murphy has been a vocal critic of Trump.
