Portland Man Paid $600 to Have Mother-In-Law Killed, Police Allege

Matthew Frick allegedly hired James McMahon to kill Frick's mother-in-law, Lisa Rader, who owns White Birch Farm.

In September 2014, Lisa Rader, 58, sustained multiple injuries after an alleged assault at White Birch Farm, of which she serves as co-owner. Police described the attack as severe and life-threatening.

“A female victim was severely beaten about the head and in grave condition,” Sgt. Shane Hassett said in a press release. “She was transported to Marlborough Hospital, stabilized and transported to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where she underwent emergency surgery for her severe life-threatening injuries.”

Two arrests were made and additional arrests are expected, Sgt. Hassett said.

Rader’s son-in-law Matthew M. Frick, 24, of 239 Sand Hill Rd. Portland, was arrested on Thursday, May 21, on the following charges, NBC Connecticut reported:

  • Aiding and abetting to first-degree assault
  • Aiding and abetting to commit home invasion
  • Aiding and abetting to commit burglary in the first degree

As a result of Frick’s arrest, State Police Detectives developed another allegedly involved suspect and applied for an arrest warrant for the accused involvement in the assault.

On June 6, James J. McMahon, Jr.,48, of 11 Coach St., Southington, and arrested and charged with:

  • Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder
  • Conspiracy to Commit Assault 1st Degree
  • Assault 1st Degree
  • Home Invasion
  • Burglary 1st Degree

According to the Middletown Press, Frick allegedly paid McMahon $600 to break into Rader’s house at night and kill her.
