Portland Officer Retires After 22 Years, Leaves Behind Legacy

After 22 years on the force, a Portland officer leaves behind a number of accomplishments as he retires.

PORTLAND, CT – After 22 years on the force, a Portland Police officer retired after years of notable achievements, the Middletown Press reported.

Gary Jarzabek is arguably most remembered for saving a woman from committing suicide in March 1999, according to the Middletown Press. He was able to grab the woman just a moment away from falling off the 90 foot Arrigoni Bridge.

The Board of Selectmen awarded Jarzabek with a Policeman of the Year Life-Saving Award in April of that year, according to the Middletown Press. Portland officers were joined by nearly two dozen officers from the Middletown Police Department as they wished Jarzabek well.
