Help out your community, save a few bucks and better the planet!

A message from Kerry O'Neill, Program Manager, Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge:

The Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge is calling on local homeowners to not just talk about a better environment, but to take action to create a more sustainable future for Portland and East Hampton.

In Connecticut, more than half of the state’s greenhouse gas pollution comes from our homes.

Many local residents have already participated in the challenge to reduce the amount of energy their homes use by making smart energy upgrades like adding insulation and air sealing. These changes also make for a more comfortable home that saves money on utility bills.

The best way to get started is through a Home Energy Solutions assessment (HES).  This visit is a four-hour home assessment with on-the-spot improvements – a $750 value for only $75. The HES assessment offers the perfect solution by showing where a home is losing energy and how much money and emissions can be saved by making the recommended upgrades.

Signing up for Home Energy Solutions, not only allows you to invest in the future and comfort of your home, but opens to you numerous state rebates that will allow you to further energy-update your home.

As a community energy savings campaign that is helping Connecticut residents save money, reduce energy use and create vital green jobs in their communities, the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge has reached several significant milestones, completing more than 1800 HES visits and 300 free home lighting installations across the state!

Since launching in December 2010, Neighbor to Neighbor has replaced almost 5,000 incandescent light bulbs with efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, avoiding 567 tons of CO2 emissions. The lifetime impact of just these efforts is enough electricity to power more than 50 homes!

So take action this Earth Day starting with your own home. Together we can lead by example and work with our friends, family and neighbors to take steps to create a more sustainable future.
