Two children - ages 4 and 5 years, were propelling themselves across the intersection in a Shaw’s supermarket shopping cart attachment described as a “Plastic buggy with toy steering wheels,” said David Hartman, who is the New Haven Police spokesman. “Apparently there was an adult or adults with the children but they may have preceded them across the intersection.”

A motorist making a turn at the intersection struck the cart containing the two children. The operator of the black car (no other description) did not stop and drove off, Hartman said.

The car was rented. Officers are investigating the car’s origin and are hopeful it will lead to the operator, Hartman said.

The children’s condition’s are considered not life-threatening. Both were conscious and alert before being taken to Yale - New Haven hospital’s Pediatric ED for evaluation and treatment.
