Additional Charges Lodged Against Suspect in Fatal East Haven Crash: Police
Johnassis Melendez was apprehended a couple of days after the Frontage Road crash that claimed the life of Gaitana Girgenti, 27.

EAST HAVEN, CT — Johnassis Melendez, 23, the driver of the vehicle in the fatal September crash in East Haven, has received additional charges related to the case, according to police.
"Prior to his court appearance [Nov. 15], a second arrest warrant was served on Johnassis Melendez for his involvement in the Frontage Road fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on September 14, 2016," East Haven Police Lt. Joseph Murgo wrote in a statement.

- Manslaughter In The Second Degree
- Misconduct With A Motor Vehicle
- Assault In The First Degree
- Reckless Driving
- Misuse of A Plate
- Theft of Number Plate
The one-car crash claimed the life of 27-year-old New Haven resident Gaitana Girgenti, who was one of three people in the car and the only one who was killed.
"Excellent work by the South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit, the East Haven Investigative Services Division, and all other officers who assisted the day of the incident and the subsequent investigation."
