Blue Ribbon Commission Issues its Recommendation for 200 Tyler Street Building

The recommendation will now be sent to East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr.

A Blue Ribbon Commission created by Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. to examine the future of the former high school building at 200 Tyler Street has decided it’s best to sell the property to a private developer, the New Haven Register reports.

The committee backs a mixed-use development and senior housing for the site as opposed to keeping the building for a municipal use, which could have cost taxpayers up to $75 million in renovation costs.

Senior housing would include: studio and 1 and 2 bedroom units for people 55 and older. It would not include Section 8 housing. There is a strong demand for senior housing in town, officials have said.

The town would also keep access to the pool and gymnasium and could save $279,000 it is currently spending to keep the building operational, the Register reports.

The official recommendation will be forwarded to Maturo next week.
