East Shore District Health Department Weighs In On How To Protect From Food-Born Parasitic Illness

Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a parasite that can spread through contaminated food or water.

EAST HAVEN, CT — The East Shore District Health Department has shared information on Cyclosporiasis and how to keep themselves and their families safe.

Connecticut is seeing a rise in cases of cyclosporiasis this summer, it noted.

"Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a parasite that can spread through contaminated food or water," the department noted. Cyclosporiasis is treated with antibiotics along with rest and adequate fluids to maintain hydration. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and loss of appetite.

The health department shared steps on lowering the risk of infection:

  • Wash all fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating them, even if you plan to peel them.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after preparing food.
  • Clean cutting boards, knives, and countertops before and after use.
  • Keep cut fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator.
  • Cook when you can.
