EHP’s New Teen Reporters

Meet Emili Lanno and Olivia Falco, journalists on the rise.

East Haven Patch is excited to introduce readers to Emili Lanno and Olivia Falco -- our new East Haven High School interns.

Both students are taking their second journalism class with teacher Jacqueline Albis. Last year they took reporting; this year editing. Lanno and Falco are two of the four editors of the school paper, The Comet.

Falco, 17, a senior, said she wants to become a fashion writer. Lanno, 16, a junior, said she hopes to be a news reporter. Stay tuned for their stories in Patch.

Falco:

Q. Why do you want to intern for Patch?

A. I just want to get experience before I go to college and study journalism. I want to make sure that's what I want to do.

Q. Why journalism?

Q. It's the kind of writing. It wasn't like any normal English class writing. You get straight to the point and you get a lot of information. And I like the freedom.

Q. What have you reported on for class?

A. News stories. The H1N1 virus. The economy. Cheap summer activities [for teens].

Q. What would you like to focus on during your internship at Patch?

A. Fashion. I watch [TV] fashion shows about three hours a week.

Q. Why fashion?

A. I went to St. Bernadette [Catholic school in New Haven] from pre-K to eighth grade. We had to wear uniforms at St. Bernadette. [When she started East Haven High in ninth] I went from uniforms to anything I wanted to wear. I felt like a lot of freedom. I went [shopping] at outlets and bought the same shirt in different colors. It was just great waking up in the morning and taking an extra 10 minutes [to pick out clothes].

Q. Where are you applying for college?

A. FIT [Fashion Institute of Technology] in New York and Parsons [The New School For Design, also in New York].

Lanno:

Q. Why do you want to intern for Patch?

A.  I like getting the news out there and getting stuff out there that people don't know about.

Q. Why journalism?

A. I love writing. It's always been my passion. I've been writing since I could learn to write. I used to have a ton of journals. I wrote in them every day [about] what was going on around me and how I feel.

Q. What have you reported on for class?

A. I wrote a tanning editorial. An interview with the mayor. A feature on the 'Twilight Saga.' It's a series of vampire movies. I wrote how violence can affect real-life relationships, like girls staying in violent relationships and not knowing how to get out.

Q. What would you like to focus on during your internship at Patch?

A. Elections, fashion, news.

Q. Where would you like to attend college?

A. I want to go to Quinnipiac. I'm also considering Southern [Connecticut State University].
