Firefighters Battle Coe Avenue Blaze In Perilous Conditions
'Cold weather hampered firefighters with slip and fall hazards but the department's personnel persevered,' fire chief said.
EAST HAVEN, CT — A house fire on Coe Avenue was knocked down by East Haven firefighters Tuesday night in the most extreme and dangerous of conditions, with firefighters having to navigate thick sheets of ice.
Three people and a pet were displaced and one person was taken to the hospital.
Mayor Joseph Carfora praised firefighters and emergency personnel for their swift action in stopping the fire and likely, saving lives.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 p.m. at 45 Coe Ave. Reports said that there was fire blowing out the second floor rear window when firefighters arrived.
On the East Haven Firefighters Facebook page, shared by Fire Chief Matt Marcarelli, firefighters reported they searched the house, ventilated the roof, and crushed the fire with the assistance of fire recuse and volunteer crews.

Marcarelli said that by the time firefighters arrived, the residents had made it out of the house and one person was taken to the hospital. Their condition is not known.
"Firefighter Monico stretched a hose line to the second floor where he found a well involved bedroom fire, he was then assisted by Firefighters Gravino and Ciscone where they extinguished the fire under the command of Battalion Chief Eileen Parlato," he wrote.
Three residents and a pet were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The cause is under investigation, he said.

"Compliments & thanks to the EHFD and all emergency personnel. We are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful team in our community and grateful for their support. Mayor Carfora was on the scene last night on Coe Ave and witnessed first hand the dedication & bravery. Even though this was a tragic event, the successful actions of our men & women of the EHFD saved lives! Prayers to all involved with last nights fire," his Facebook page post Wednesday reads.
