EAST HAVEN, CT — East Haven Police officers were called to 65 Messina Drive, East Farm Village for a welfare check Tuesday night. The call was first described as an "untimely death" and an investigation was begun. By Wednesday, police explained what led to that call.

Before arriving, police were told by the property manager that a "foul odor was emanating from one of the units."

When cops got there they found a woman dead inside the apartment, now identified as 94-year-old Lydia Civitelli.

Police said that the "circumstances in which the notification was made to police prompted officers to secure the scene and call for detectives who quickly determined that foul play was not a factor."

Civitelli's body was transported to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner for further investigation but is not considered a suspicious death.
