Veterans, families and caregivers recently gathered at 49 School Street beside the newly installed &ldquo;Coming Soon&rdquo; sign for the Veterans &amp; Families Legacy Park in Somers, CT. The photographs capture the people this project is meant to honor and welcome: veterans across generations, the families who share their service, and the neighbors who care for them.
The Town of Somers has approved the park as a capital project, and its supporters are seeking donations to fund construction rather than taxpayer dollars. The public campaign goal is $1 million, encompassing project development, construction and long-term care. The sign marks a visible step forward; the park itself remains in planning and fundraising stages.
Envisioned near the Scantic River recreation area, the park will offer a place to walk, reflect and gather. The current concept includes a quarter mile loop with engraved bricks (buy-a-brick fundraiser), gardens and benches, a central American flag plaza, and flags honoring the military services, prisoners of war and those missing in action. The design also includes opportunities to share stories and remember loved ones. Final details depend on engineering, funding and Town approvals.
The Somers Department of Veterans Affairs brought the vision forward and continues to advise the project. The Town&rsquo;s Veterans and Families Legacy Park Ad Hoc Committee is coordinating its public planning work. Legacy of Service: Somers Veterans Foundation, Inc. is supporting fundraising and community participation. A $10,000 grant from the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation has already supported the effort, with portions designated for planning and construction.
For someone who served, the park can be a place to feel seen. For a child or grandchild, it can be a place to hear a story that might otherwise be lost. For the community, it can be a shared space where remembrance and everyday life meet.

Ellington is celebrating 250 years of American history&mdash;and the entire community is invited! Saturday, October 3, from 1 to 6 p.m., the Town Green will become the gathering place for an afternoon of history, food, music, fun and hometown pride.
The celebration begins at 1 p.m., giving neighbors a chance to gather, visit the timeline of Ellington's history at the <a href="https://www.ellingtonhistsoc.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Nellie McKnight Museum</a>, enjoy food from local food trucks, explore the many booths on the Green and reconnect with friends from throughout town. Children can join the scavenger hunt and earn a special wooden commemorative coin along the way.
Then, at 2 p.m., the community will come together for a patriotic parade. The parade will begin on Berr Avenue, travel along Main Street and end at the Department of Public Works.
After the parade, everyone is invited to gather at the gazebo on the Green for a reading of the Declaration of Independence, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Local musicians will provide patriotic music throughout the afternoon, showcasing the talent right here in the Ellington community. Visit the many participants on the green and enjoy a variety of food from various vendors.
At 4:30 p.m., local leaders will share remarks, followed by a guest speaker. The afternoon will culminate with the entire community joining together to sing &ldquo;God Bless America.&rdquo;

Whether you have lived in town for generations or are new to the community, everyone is encouraged to come out, meet others, support local organizations and businesses, and share in an afternoon that celebrates both the nation's history and the community's own hometown spirit.
General parking will be available at Town Hall, Arbor Park, Center School, Market Park and Ellington High School&mdash;all within a short walk of the Green.
Handicap parking will be available at the Senior Center, with a shuttle to the event.

Every year (now in its 19th year) Operation Homefront hosts the Military Child of the Year&reg; Awards. The awards are open to military children between the ages of 13-18. There are 7 recipients 1 child from each branch of service and each recipient receives $10,000 CASH, a laptop, other donated goodies, and a 3-day trip to Washington, D.C. with us and their families.
Children are entered by nominations. Anyone that knows a military child can nominate any military child. So, you may nominate your students, friend&rsquo;s children, children can nominate their siblings and best friends and so on. The awards are open to Active Duty, reserves, Gold Star, National Guard, AND retired military children. The program is entirely FREE and exclusive to military children, and you do not need to create an account to submit a nomination.
If you know a military child, we would love to hear their story!! We would also appreciate if you would help us get the word out there to your military communities and families!

Somers Department of Veterans Affairs presented a Somers Veterans Coffeehouse on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am at Somers Town Hall &ndash; Auditorium, 600 Main Street, Somers, CT. The event brought veterans, families, and supporters together for timely information about VA services and benefits, local tax information for veterans, and community discussion about future coffeehouses. Veterans, families, and supporters were welcomed.
Program and Community Invitation
The program featured the latest VA services and benefits updates, local tax information for veterans, a Veterans &amp; Families Legacy Park Project update, and a live veteran survey on future coffeehouses. Attendees had an opportunity to hear updates, review information, and share input about future gatherings.

The event host and guest speaker, Director David McCaffrey, shared the stage with appear his loyal and loving service dog, Reilly.&nbsp; The event was well attended and enjoyed by all attendees.
