Ellington Historical Society Accomplishes Much in 2023
A small group of volunteers have made great improvements to the Nellie McKnight Museum and provided free events enjoyed by many.
A small group of volunteers at the Ellington Historical Society have been extremely busy pursuing the mission of collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of Ellington's rural agricultural community through collections, exhibitions, and events. Much has been accomplished in 2023 so far.
- The Crystal Lake Showcase exhibit featuring informative panels, written information, and artifacts on the rich history of Crystal Lake dating back to the 1800s has delighted many. The exhibit will remain open through December 23rd.
- The community has embraced monthly events with over 4,500 visitors to the museum. The increase in attendance has helped to secure several grants.
- A beautiful pavilion, funded by a State of Connecticut ARPA grant was built on the museum grounds.
- The archive room has had a complete makeover made possible by a grant through Conservation ConneCTion and funded by the CT Cultural Fund and an additional grant from the Town of Ellington ARPA funds.
- Progress continues with the organization of archives with the goal of having an online finding guide available to the public in 2024.
- A new packet to teach the history of Ellington was distributed to all grade 3 teachers in Ellington to help teachers meet Connecticuts Social Studies Standards.
- Historical Society members have presented hands-on activities in elementary school classrooms.
- Several programs featuring historical topics of Ellington were held at the Hall Memorial Library.
The Ellington Historical Society is embarking on its 2023 Annual Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of donors to last year’s Annual Appeal, The Ellington Historical Society was able to install two mini-split units in the Nellie McKnight Museum. The split A/C and heating system has made it possible to keep a constant temperature in the house museum which will help to protect the precious artifacts and archive collection for years to come.
The Ellington Historical Society's goal for 2023 is to raise $10,000 by December 31st for the repair and painting of the much-deteriorated plaster walls in the dining room and kitchen. The upkeep of the physical condition of the Nellie McKnight Museum is an integral part of its mission.
