Ellington Historical Society Makes Impact In 2021
The Nellie McKnight Museum is well on its way to becoming an icon Ellington residents can be proud of.
Improvements to the property and activities at the Nellie McKnight Museum in 2021 are a great example of what can be accomplished when local businesses, organizations and residents are dedicated to giving back to their community. The 1812 Federalist style home, an icon in the historic Ellington center, is well on its way to becoming a symbol Ellington residents can be proud of.
Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and residents, many major improvements were made to the property including but not limited to a new driveway, septic system, granite steps, porch railings, landscaping, mini split HVAC system and electrical work. The next major project in store is to replace the knob and tube wiring in the attic of the 1812 house. Highlights of the season’s events included the Vintage Flea Market, Farm Day, Prom Photo Ops, Fall Festival and Winterfest.
To raise much needed funds for property maintenance, the Farm Exhibit building was temporarily transformed to the Holiday Marketplace, loaded with gifts, home décor and vintage items. Winterfest at Nellie’s was enjoyed by many who toured the delightfully decorated 1812 house museum and warmed themselves by the bonfires while sipping hot chocolate and reconnecting with neighbors and friends.

Much was accomplished in 2021 with lots more to do in 2022. A three-year strategic plan will be completed this winter and will help to prioritize and schedule projects, events, and property maintenance. The Museum will be closed January-March to create on a new photo exhibit which will open in April.
The Nellie McKnight Museum property is owned by The Ellington Historical Society, a 501c3 non-profit organization. Funding to maintain the property and host public events is dependent on donations, memberships, and fundraising activities. The yearly dues of $20 per individual or $40 per family are a major source of funding. Members can be active by donating volunteer hours or simply support the society through dues. Join online at www.ellingtonhistsoc.org. where donations can also be submitted.
